Recently approached by Otago Rugby to conduct Judo seminars for the Highlanders and their development squads, to pass on skills as used in Judo for their game tactics, such as tackling take downs using Judo throws, explosive action/reactions, judo holds, arm immobilizing, breakfalls etc, with introduction to skills within Judo that are very much a secret away from the public and other rugby unions.

Rugby players such as Jeff Wilson, Anton Oliver, Taine Randell, Kees Meeuws, the list goes on, have all at some time undergone tuition through Brian and his Black Belt students. Byron Kelleher "All Black" has studied Judo at Brian's Judo club for a number of years and now claims that he often uses Judo skills in his rugby tactics to overcome his opposition.

Judo skills can be adopted to enhance most contact sport, balance is a key attribute, along with flexibility, power and speed. Training of the mind to help ones sport is also a known factor, it compliments Judo and other sport. For example, if you picture a specific sporting movement that you wish to achieve, and its contained multiple actions, this could be developed in your mind over and over again until you have complete control of the movements and the technique becomes so much more polished and easier to do when putting it to practice live.

The Highlanders and the Otago Rugby development squads have undergone many sessions on the Judo mat, and it will be interesting to see the various ideas come to life during their rugby games. Brian said that the various Judo skills will not become evident immediately, but with ongoing training, the skills will show in their game within 12 months.

Many famous people have tried fun Judo with Brian. One of the more outstanding personalities was when Sir Robert Muldoon (Past Prime Minister) paid a visit to Dunedin on one of his political travels. he was invited to go along to Brian's club for an evening of fun and entertainment. Afterwards he was invited to get on the mat and do some basic Judo.
